Taking risks with tonal variation: (Image 241)
To be bold with tonal contrasts takes courage! Sometimes we are not aware why our paintings look a little bit flat, lacking in dynamic contrast because we so often get distracted by the strong appeal of colour. Every colour can produce a variety of tones, how light or dark these can go depends on the colour itself. In studying and focussing on tonal values, experimenting with black and white, also trying monochromatic studies, we shall hopefully gain confidence in getting our tones right and create paintings that hold the viewer’s interest!
Your usual painting materials if you have them, plus some drawing paper for exercises. Paper, board or canvas for a main painting. Some charcoal might be useful.
